When to choose a web design template over a customized design.

on Jul 27in Web Design Tips tagged , by james

One of the questions being asked by my new clients is the difference between purchasing a website template or having the website customized. This is one of the big decisions they will come up with before handing over the project to a freelance web designer.

This article will illustrate some of the differences between purchasing a business website template over a customize web design. After reading this article, the web design client will have a ground knowledge whether he will be purchasing a website template or have a customized web design.

1. Time
Template or pre-made sites are readily available. You just need to choose a design according to your preferred theme and “wallah” you now have an instant design. All you need to do is to put in your logo,
company name and other data pertaining to your site. Some templates are given free by hosting companies and web designers, while others are paid premium templates.

2. Money
Templates are much cheaper than the customized design service. business website template sometimes ranges from $25 to $150 dollars while customize design services starts at $300 depending on the portfolio of the designers. At times, high level designers fee starts at $600.

3. Standards
One of the great advantage of website templates or pre-made sites is that they are design to be in compatible to old and latest browsers. Most of which are CSS and W3C compliant. This means that it will lessen the time in testing from different browsers. However, please take note that pre-made sites that uses scripts needed to be tested to prevent security holes.

4. Branding.
If your company’s marketing strategy is not focus on building a brand on the Internet, then web templates are for you. Business website template designs do not stand out because their design are made for the ‘many’.

5. Needs.
This is the most important aspect of all. Not all affordable web design templates or pre-made sites can be customized according to the project’s needs. At times it is much cheaper and faster to have a website built from scratch rather than having a template modified. Before purchasing a website template make it sure that it will fit your needs.

So far these are the five differences I usually tell my clients whenever they ask me whether they will just buy it outside the box or have it customized.
