How to Make Your Own Twitter Background

on Oct 11in Tutorials tagged by james

Ever wonder how to make your own customized twitter background? In this tutorial, you will learn how to create your own customized twitter background from you favorite graphic editor.

1. Open your photoshop and create a canvass with this size of 2048px x 1707. I got this size from http://www.croncast.com/blog/1320/Twitter-background-guidelines-template-size.php. There are numerous tutorials that uses smaller resolutions like 1600px wide by 1200px or 1255px x 555 height. The reason I prefer the croncast size for twitter background because it can accommodate high resolution without destroying the design. To see what I mean here is a twitter profile viewed in different monitor resolutions.

as you can see the girl background from the profile was hidden from view.

However it appear just right with 1280×800 resolution. On the other hand using a much higher resolution the background moves farther from the left which is still quite good since if doesn’t fully affect the entire design.

2. Create a guide for the left branding. First column guide will be 125px horizontally and the second column[guide] will be at 250px. Why divide the left into two columns? So that even if the resolution squeezes to 1024×768 the first column will not break apart only the second column will be hidden. However for higher resolution, the second column will again be visible.

3. Next create the top branding. Insert your logo 15px from the top and 20px from the left. After which you can insert your design in the first column and the second column. As you can see in my twitter profile, the design did not break apart from smaller resolution, but additional designs pop in higher resolution.

You can also noticed that I have included a “best viewed” resolution notice for the purpose that viewer will know that additional design can be seen in recommended resolution.

4. Export your design with a max of 800k. Twitter only allows up to 800k background image.

Designing with different screen resolution is always the challenged for designers, I hope that this article has help you in finding ways to solve the design issue of designing twitter background in different resolution.

I started twitter a few weeks ago, since then I’ve begun to love it. When I started I hated Twitter it’s allowed me to network with people in my business alot easier. News and updates happen in right away which makes for a great social communication app.

Good thing you’ve covered about the resolution! That’s basically the most tricky thing about designing Twitter backgrounds. The best method really, as you’ve said, is to create a design that’s well suited for a high resolution (low res. creations can look highly unprofessional).
